On May 29, 2024, The Emancipation Committee of Upson hosted the second annual Heritage Awards Banquet at Thomaston-Upson Senior Center in Thomaston, Georgia.
This banquet was a tribute to the May 29, 1865 date and the African American community of past and future trailblazers.
Pastor Greg Smith gave an invocation and dinner was then served to attendees, who packed out the establishment. The MC of the night was Jasmine Grisham who gave presenter information and historical facts throughout the night. President Deneane Jones opened the ceremony with the Welcome.
The first awards of the evening were the Youth Alive Scholarships presented to Mr. Qua'Narious Walker and Mr. Qunitrez Daniel. Rosa Lee Daniel received the George W. Drake Education Award. Jeffrey Middlebrooks received the James C. Banks Recreation Award. Coach Darrell Lockhart received the Roman "Big Doc" Turmon Athletic Award. Jump For Fun Georgia received the Elijah L. Green Local Business Award. Dr. Wayne Kong received the Hillary Cunningham Business Award. Dissipating Disparities, Inc. received the Monroe G. Worthy Non-Profit Award.
After the first half of awards were presented, Mrs. Martika Foster graced the event with a performance of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight".
Kevin Prater received the Johnnie E. Bentley Civil Rights Award. Oscar Zellner received the Freddie Brown First Responders Award. William Hughley received the George E. Trice Jr. Governmental Services Award. Pastor Coleman Dumas III received the Rev. C.H. Atwater Award. Clifford Andrews received the Rev. Otis King Sr. Holding The Light Award. Shirlene Jordan received the Marzella King Devoted Member Award. Langston Johnson received the George E. Green Jr. Lincoln Park Trustee Award. Kenneth Carter received the William Guilford Emancipation Award.
Closing Remarks were made by President Jones.
